Independent Living Assessments

Helping You Stay Independent for Longer

Maintaining your independence is about much more than staying in your own home. It’s about continuing to do the everyday activities that matter to you safely, confidently and with as little assistance as possible.

At OT Life, we provide personalised Independent Living Assessments to identify any challenges you’re experiencing and recommend practical solutions that help you remain independent for as long as possible.

Whether you’re finding daily tasks more difficult because of age, illness, injury or reduced mobility, our assessments focus on what you can do and how small changes can make a big difference.

What Is an Independent Living Assessment?

An Independent Living Assessment is a comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessment carried out in your own home.

We look at how you manage everyday activities such as:

  • Moving safely around your home
  • Getting in and out of bed
  • Using the bathroom safely
  • Preparing meals
  • Washing and dressing
  • Climbing stairs
  • Managing fatigue
  • Reducing the risk of falls
  • Using equipment effectively

The aim is to understand what’s becoming difficult and identify practical ways to make everyday life easier.

Every Assessment Is Personal

No two people are the same.

Rather than following a checklist, we take time to understand your lifestyle, routines, priorities and goals.

Recommendations may include:

  • Small changes to daily routines
  • Equipment to improve safety and independence
  • Home adaptations
  • Advice for family members or carers
  • Falls prevention strategies
  • Signposting to additional services where appropriate

Our recommendations are always tailored to your individual circumstances.

This may include advice on:

  • Safer moving techniques
  • Carer positioning
  • Reducing manual handling risks
  • Appropriate equipment
  • Care planning

Recommendations are always tailored to the individual’s needs and home environment.

Who Can Benefit?

An Independent Living Assessment may be helpful if you or a family member:

  • Have experienced a recent fall
  • Have been discharged from hospital
  • Have noticed everyday tasks becoming more difficult
  • Live with arthritis, Parkinson’s disease, stroke, dementia or another long-term condition
  • Feel less confident moving around the home
  • Want to remain living independently for as long as possible

What Happens During the Assessment?

The assessment takes place in your own home, allowing recommendations to be based on your real environment.

During the visit we will:

  • Discuss your current difficulties and goals
  • Observe how you complete everyday activities
  • Identify any safety concerns
  • Assess mobility and transfers
  • Recommend equipment or adaptations if appropriate
  • Provide practical advice to support independent living

Following the assessment, you’ll receive a written report outlining our recommendations.
